When I was in New Orleans, I enjoyed walking up and down Canal Street. It is well lit in the early morning and evening hours, thus it seems relatively safe. During the daylight I would have no issues at all. There was a great restaurant just a few blocks from the French Quarter, but I don't remember if it was diet friendly or not - it has been a while, so I will refrain from suggesting it.

I hope you continue to have a good time.
